The talk will discuss Anita Desai's Baumgartner's Bombay (1988) and Salman Rushdie's The Moor's Last Sign (1995) as examples of the complexity of the use of the Holocaust and Jewish history in postcolonial and postmodern fiction.
Efraim Sicher is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He has published on modern Jewish culture, the 19th century British novel, and Holocaust memory, including the recent Babel in Context, Rereading the City/Rereading Dickens.
Linda Weinhouse is Professor of British literature and of Women's Studies at Community College of Baltimore County. She has published widely on Nadine Gordimer, Doris Lessing, and Anita Desai.
